Norfolk's Police and Crime Commissioner launches Safer Norfolk initiative with partners to keep town centres safe
Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner has launched Safer Norfolk, an initiative to keep town centres safe over the summer months. This is part of the Government’s Safer Streets Summer Initiative which will run from July to the end of September. Partners across the county will deliver engagement and local initiatives with communities in priority areas.
Sarah Taylor, Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “Our town centres and communities are vibrant, welcoming places where businesses thrive and people feel safe to shop, socialise, live and visit.
“I am really delighted that the government’s Safer Streets Summer Initiative has given us an opportunity to shine a light on the work that the Constabulary does, and to demonstrate the clear positive impact of close partnership working. Listening to our communities and, most importantly finding out about their concerns, allows us to solve problems and create preventative measures to design out crime in our town centres. Absolutely central to my work is the belief that problems are best solved when done with local people and created with local communities, rather than something that is done to local communities. So, I’m particularly pleased that this Safer Norfolk programme includes working with local people and businesses in many different ways across the county.”
Mark Stokes, Chair of the Norfolk Community Safety Partnership, said: “Norfolk is one of the safest counties in the country but that doesn’t make us complacent in our approach to tackling crime and keeping people safe. We know that with the warmer and lighter evenings, more crime takes place particularly in urban areas. So, we are working closely with Norfolk Constabulary, councils, schools, health services, businesses, retailers, transport, and community organisations to deliver our plans in partnership for the summer months.”
Safer Norfolk has been developed through the Norfolk Community Safety Partnership (NCSP) and is managed by the Community Safety and Violence Reduction Coordination Team within the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk (OPCCN) which places the Police and Crime Commissioner at the heart of community safety already.
As part of the initiative, the Safer Norfolk partnership will:
- Work with local people to build stronger, more connected communities where everyone feels safe to live, visit and work.
- Work directly with local people to understand the issues that matter most to you and your community.
- Deliver community-led solutions to address crime and antisocial behaviour in your communities.
- Work together to create and maintain the communities we deserve. Safer streets start with all of us – business, residents and local organisations
- Protect the vulnerable and keep people safe – this is at the heart of everything we do.
